Nutrition Standards for Paediatric Inpatients in NSW Hospitals


To define the types and amounts of foods that must be offered to paediatric patients on standard hospital menus.


An evidence-based guide on food and nutrition for paediatric patients in hospital.


The Standards guide hospitals to plan menus and offer meals that meet children’s needs, whilst also providing them with the opportunity to choose and enjoy the food they eat.

The Standards support the NSW Health policy directive for Nutrition Care (PD2011_78).


The Nutrition Standards were developed by a multidisciplinary reference group.

The Nutrition Standards contain:

  • Nutrient goals:the amount of energy and key nutrients that the standard menu must provide per day.
  • Minimum menu choices:the minimum number of food choices and minimum serve-sizes for each of the 3-4 main meals and 2-3 mid-sized meals per day.

The Nutrition Standards apply to all NSW inpatient facilities that serve meals to children.

The ACI Nutrition Standards and Therapeutic Diet Specifications reference group was established to oversee the review, revision and evaluation process.

Evaluation includes:

  • Compliance of menus to the standards
  • Patient satisfaction
  • Feedback from clinicians
  • Clinical currency
  • Outcomes
